09-10 Topic Areas Announced

Check out the topic areas below, group selection will take place tomorrow at Class Meeting.

Business Ethics
How far are you willing to go to make money? Would you do something you knew was unethical for profit? This course will address the recent economic crisis in the United States while looking at how business practices in general and ethics in particular affected the recession. If you are interested in a career in business or finance, or if you have a strong sense of right and wrong this is a good group for you.

Diet & Lifestyle
How much a factor does genetics play in the person you will become? Are you in charge of your future, or does culture and mass marketing rule your destiny? Are you really what you eat? This course will explore the intersection of diet, culture, marketing and personal identity. If you are interested in a career in public health or nutrition, or if you have a strong sense of your own personal identity this is a good group for you.

Engineering our Future
Will nuclear power solve the problem of clean air, or are we just postponing the pollution question for future generations? Many of the world’s most persistent problems will be solved by engineers, but arguably many of these same problems were caused by engineers from a previous generation. This group will consider sustainable engineering practices to explore how we might address the needs of today without sacrificing our future. If you are interested in a career in engineering or have a strong interest in sustainability and environmental issues, this group is for you.

Justice & Law
Illegal drug use is a blight on society yet some banned substances may have possible medical benefits. This course will take a hard look at how drug use destroys the lives of young people and how the legal system attempts to address this difficult topic. If you are interested in a career in law or social justice, or if you have a desire to see first hand how our legal system works this is a good group for you.

Language & Culture
Should English be the official and required language for the United States? Are we still a ‘melting pot’ or is there a more globally relevant dialog in the immigrant community? This course will explore immigration and the English language both in our own country and in other countries. If you are interested in a career in international business or if you have a strong interest in other cultures this is the group for you.

Music & Business
Is it possible for an artist to make it big without selling out? How have new technologies transformed the landscape of rising musicians? This course will explore what it takes to make it in the music industry while still remaining true to your authentic voice. If you are interested in a career in music, marketing or business, or if you have a strong interest in authentic self expression this is the group for you.

New Media
Will you have all your text books on the iPad next year? Will newspapers soon be a thing of the past? Will web video soon be more relevant than TV? This course will explore new and emerging forms of media and consider how they interact with older mediums. If you are interested in a career in film, broadcasting or the Internet, or if you have a strong interest in new technologies this group is for you.

Racial Profiling
Are you willing to trade your freedom for safety? Are you willing to trade the freedom of others for safety? This course will explore the difficulties of keeping a society safe while not discriminating against a particular group or minority. If you are interested in a career in government, law enforcement or politics, or if you have a strong interest in difficult moral questions this group is for you.

Street Art: Artists or Vandals?
Is public art on the sides of buildings a valid form of expression? What makes “fine art” valuable? Should graffiti be erased from the urban landscape? This course will explore art forms beyond the museum walls, asking questions about the validity of this art form, the training street artists have, and the value of their work. If you are considering a career in art or marketing, or if you have a strong appreciation for the beauty of the urban landscape this is a good group for you.

Sustainable Architecture
Although we posses futuristic technologies in the developed world, we still haven’t solved some of our most basic problems. Homelessness, for example, continues to be a thorny urban issue. This group will propose a radical solution to this persistent problem: what if a new type of house could be the solution? If you are interested in a career in architecture or design, or if you have a strong desire to help others, this group is for you.
